1.

“It’s your first day of high school, and I’d hate to see you have a bad hair day!” Mrs. Winters shouted from the kitchen on the first floor of the household. At the sound of “bad hair day,” Jasey shot up from the satin duvet of her bed. The first thing she did was look in the mirror. Jeez, she thought. Of all days to have bad hair, this was the worst. She desperately tried to flatten her frizzy locks, but failed.
No problem. When in doubt, scrunch. She quickly showered and changed into her first day of school outfit: an Urban Outfitters pinstriped shirt dress paired with a brown braided belt from Forever 21 and matching brown Steve Madden cowboy boots. She stood in front of her full-length mirror, observing her outfit at all angles. It had to be a 10, and not a decimal less.
As for the hair mishap, she scrunched it nicely with some help from her best friends Hair and Spray. “Seriously, get down here and eat some breakfast because I’m not driving you to school!” her mother called once more.  “Fine, fine!” Jasey spritzed herself with her signature scent, Be Delicious by DKNY, and stomped down the stairs to the kitchen.
“Five minutes and counting until the bus comes,” Mrs. Winters announced, tapping her imaginary wristwatch.  “It’s fine. I’ve got it all under control,” she said coolly. She grabbed a Chewy granola bar and a travel-sized bottle of Tropicana from the refrigerator and smirked.
“Aren’t you glad you have a genius for a daughter?”  Her mother rolled her eyes and chuckled. “Have a good day, Hun.”  Jasey walked to her bus stop, just on time. She slowly got onto the bus, careful not to fall face-first in her boots. Everyone in the seats stared at her as she walked down the aisle. Either they liked the way she looked, or didn’t—she’d never know.
When she spotted her friends, she waved at them and went to the middle of the bus where they were sitting. Audrina Brooks, Lacie Rizzo, and Kandace Zimmerman had been Jasey’s best friends for as long as she could remember.
“Jase, did you get tanner between now and the last time I saw you?” Lacie leaned across the aisle of the bus to get a better look. Jasey laughed, hooking her long bangs behind her ear. “I don’t know, Lace. You mean between now and yesterday?” The four of them had a pre-high-school meeting at Audrina’s place to talk about the year ahead. Their main promise was to make sure that they stayed friends, no matter what.
“True,” Lacie said, settling back into her seat. Jasey looked at her three friends from head to toe. “You guys look really cute! I’m glad we decided to keep our outfits a surprise.”
The yellow bus squealed to a stop and the students filed out. Jasey almost gasped when she caught a glimpse of her new school. Never before had she seen people that didn’t wear Hollister or UO.  For the first time, she was going to go to school with goth, scene, and emo people. Imagine that.
A boy with shaggy blonde hair passed Jasey and her friends and nodded at them. Once he passed, the girls instantly started gushing.
            “Oh, he’s so cute!”
“He was nodding at me, did you see that?”
“No, I saw him nodding at me!”
            “I’ve seen his MySpace—so hot!”
“What was that, Ash?” Jasey asked, raising her eyebrows at her.
“What was what?” Audrina brushed off nonchalantly. “Let’s go in.”
The freshman student body was welcomed by a thirty minute assembly, stating the school rules and regulations. “Borefest,” Jasey yawned halfway through the principal’s speech. The same blonde kid they had seen before turned around, his eyes on her.
“Nice,” he laughed. He flashed a smile and turned back into his seat.
“He was so looking at you!” Lacie whispered loudly into Jasey’s ear.
After the assembly, the principal announced that teachers would be handing out the freshman schedules. Jasey got onto the S-Z line with Kandace. When it was her turn to get her schedule, she noticed that the teacher was her eighth grade history teacher. “Mr. Shields, what are you doing here?”
He handed her a paper labeled WINTERS, JASEY RAE. “Well, they transferred me here to be the global history teacher for freshmen and sophomores.”
“And it looks like you’re in my freshman sixth period class. You too, Kandace.” Jasey smiled brightly. “That’s awesome! I loved your class last year, Mr. S. I guess we’ll see you sixth!” Mr. Shields gave them a small wave and continued handing out the rest of the schedules.
Jasey and Kandace met up with Audrina and Lacie to compare schedules. For the most part, they would see each other throughout the day. Fortunately, they all had a seventh period lunch.
The day had barely even started, but Jasey had a good feeling about high school.
